HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

sidewalk Thoughts from the Sidewalk

Where has the time gone? The last day of school is less than one month off. Another crop of seniors are about to become alumni. This is my last time writing in this space. The Lord has been good but he has been fast as well.

I encourage you to take time to give thanks to God for the safety he has granted our school. I am reminded of this every morning as I stand on the sidewalk watching the drop-off (some days more than other). God has also granted us safety on numerous field trips, athletic events, and in just the average, ordinary days as well.

Speaking of safety, we all give thanks for God's gracious provision of safety, traveling mercies and an expansion of our students' view of the world through the trips our students took to Italy and Uganda. The students presented an exciting and informative chapel, sharing what some of what they learned on their jaunts.

Please give heartfelt greetings and a warm welcome to Mr. Robertson as he transitions into his new position as the headmaster. During the month of May Mr. Robertson will be picking up the plans for the summer and the next school year as he gets to know the Covenant community. I will continue to handle the issues relating to this current school year. I encourage you to chat up Mr. Robertson a bit and get to know him - he's a great guy and brings tremendous qualities to Covenant.

Come on out on 10 May at 5:00 PM to bear witness to the Class of '08 commencing with their lives beyond high school. If you want to see Covenant in its glory this is a great opportunity!

Every middle- and high school student's favorite time is just around the corner - EXAMS! Please encourage your children who have exams to get rest and adequately prepare for these wonderful opportunities for them to demonstrate what they've been learning this past semester.

On a personal note, thank you for three great years. The school community has been very gracious and loving to my family and I thank you for it. We will be moving the first week of June so we will be around for a little bit more to say goodbye. We all have some wonderful memories from our time here. We will miss you.

Seeing you from the sidewalk has been a joy!

Italy08Senior Class
"Amazing" doesn't begin to describe our trip to Italy. We spent one week in Florence, with day trips by train to Venice, Siena, and Pontessieve, where we had a cooking class. Our days in Florence were spent looking at art, history, and architecture that blew our minds!! We enjoyed a Florence-Reggina soccer game and met with Campus Crusade missionaries at the University of Florence. Our last day and night were spent in Rome. We were overwhelmed by the history at every turn. The trip far exceeded our expectations! Thank you, thank you to all who helped us get there!! We are wrapping up our fund raising for the year for our senior gifts (we think all parents will really appreciate them) and to pay for our commencement speaker.

SpringBUgandaMission Trip to Uganda during Spring Break
Hey everybody! Ya'll ready for the end of the school year??? Yeah, me too...!!  Okay so, while most of you were relaxing at home and enjoying the wonderful beach atmosphere in Panama City, I went with a small group of people from my church to Uganda, Africa on a 10-day mission trip, and let me tell you this: it was by far the most amazing and inspiring experiences of my life. Seriously, to see the way the people over there are content and have complete joy and peace in the LORD, yet they lack some of the most basic comforts we enjoy, like running water and showers and even food. It really was absolutely stunning to see a vastly different area of the world where poverty, suffering, hardships, and pain are the only things many people know every single day of their lives. But the most amazing part about the whole trip was to be able to go there and literally feel the power of God move through us as we ministered to the people there, encouraging them to stay strong in Christ and never lose hope in Him. The way the Holy Spirit is working over there is breathtaking and, basically, totally awesome!!! Anyways, I just wanted to share a tiny bit about what went on during our trip, and to thank all of you who supported us in any and every way. God's work truly was done and He is continuing to work over there in immense ways. Please keep praying for the people over there, as they continue to deal with the struggles of everyday life and they are very much in need. Thank you again, and God bless! -Zach Bingham, Junior

Hey Everyone,
This spring break Andrew Underhill, Heather Smith, Zach Bingham, My dad, Pastor Hayes, and I went to East Africa. We visited a country called Uganda, most of you know Pastor Hayes goes there at least twice a year. I just wanted to tell you about one experience that we had on the way to Mabaale, which is the village that we stayed and ministered the most in. We were driving for about 4 or so hours and ended breaking down in a small village called Hoima about 3 hours from Mabaale. Apparently, we had a leaf spring break. We were all pretty upset, but thankfully the Lord had a different plan for us than to just sit around and be stared at awkwardly by the Ugandans (It was pretty weird at first being stared at). So to make it a little less strange being stared at and all, we got out a soccer ball. We started playing soccer with the kids and took a lot of pictures. I believe the Lord really truly blessed that experience. They were laughing and enjoying themselves tremendously. We left a seed in Hoima and I believe if we were to come back they would, most certainly, remember us. The kids were GREAT and they were so LOVING. Even though, we looked a lot different they still loved us and enjoyed listening to us. They were extremely open with us talking to them about the Lord. They all were ecstatic when we took out Bibles for them. Everywhere we went there would be a HUGE crowd of kids. I loved Uganda and plan on going back and pray that you guys would join me. It was a fantastic blessing to visit them!!!!!!! -Emily Trumbull, Sophomore

My experience in Uganda was awesome. It was a great trip, and one of my favorite things was meeting people and talking to them. They were really welcoming to us, and they were receptive of what we came to say. We got attached to the kids, and were sad and happy at the same time when it was time to leave. We went on a safari, which was really cool. We saw a lot of different animals and it was just neat to be in the African atmosphere. It was encouraging to us in our faiths to see how much joy they had in Christ and how content they were with how little they survived on. I would love to go back some day!                                   -Heather Smith, Sophomore

 Preschool News
This is an exciting time for Preschool!  This month we have enjoyed our classmates on field trips to pick strawberries at Sweatmore Ranch and for a Preschool movie day at the Grande Theatre in Pier Park.  We loved Horton Hears A Who!  We have also celebrated God's gift of birth and renewal as we released our baby tadpoles back into the wild and watched them hop along outside our playground area.  Mrs. Jennifer has helped us open our eyes to the wonders of God's creation with an erupting volcano in her room, and we are diligently rehearsing for our end-of-the-year performance on May 20.  We are super excited to show our parents and friends just how much we have learned this school year and how great we are at the Toody Ta!
ThirdGrApril Elementary News
K5 Nix

The Friendly Frogs are leaping to the end of the school year with several exciting science observations. First, the students are observing an ant farm. The ants have already made multiple tunnels. Second, the students are observing butterflies. They arrived in our room as larvae and after 3 weeks, we now have butterflies. Third, we are patiently waiting for our ladybugs to complete their life cycle. Through these observations the students are being reminded what an awesome God we serve. Reading groups continue to be daily and all the students are showing progress in their reading. The students can now count by 2's, 5's, 10's and 25's. Students have learned to recognize and the value of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter. Students can also tell time to the hour, 1/2 hour and :15. It is hard to believe the year is almost over! But, the students are ready for FIRST GRADE!

1st Grade Earnest

We are hatching baby chicks in our first grade class! We have had a great time being "mother hens" to 21 chicken eggs in our classroom. We have learned great words like incubator, enhanced our skills of reading a thermometer, learned how life develops even when we are not able to see inside, and learned that constant attention is needed to be a good parent! Every day our student of the day has been responsible for tracking the temperature and making sure the eggs are being rocked back and forth within the incubator. We are looking forward to the arrival of our baby chicks during the first week of May.

1st Grade Franklin

First grade started the month out with their Spring Sing that Mrs. Keel directed. They sang in chapel with kindergarten and the other first graders. They all did a great job. Field day was a big success, and we are grateful that it came before Brady's broken leg. We have been learning to carry in Math, taking a trip around the world in Social Studies, and reading, reading, reading. Everyone is looking forward to our end of the year party. Our room mothers have been amazing and we are very thankful for them all. It has been a joy to teach these bright, eager to learn, kind, loving and energetic first graders.

2nd Grade Martin

The second grade has been busy with multiplication and division problems in Math. We have learned how to write a paragraph that appeals to the readers senses and continued to read interesting stories about famous people during our Reading time each day. The best part about the last few weeks has been Mrs. Martin's return She is teaching half days and we are enjoying having her back in the classroom. We have had a great year and are looking forward to the challenges I third grade.

3rd Grade Street

Our third grade class just took a trip around the world. The students presented their reports on their chosen country. We learned about other countries and sampled some of their foods. We enjoyed sharing them with our parents, teachers, and other classes. Stepping back in time to the Bible days of Moses and Joshua, we are about to enter the Promised Land and fight the battles to claim the land. Moving forward to the 1900's we are learning about how Booker T. Washington & George Washington Carver began life as slaves and grew up to make major impacts in America.

4th Grade Koebel

The 4th graders have had a busy month as we wind down the school year. We are completing our Math books with a little algebra and geometry. We've learned the 8 parts of speech in Language and learned all about rocks - including getting to break open our very own geodes. Most importantly, we've learned all about King David and his devotion to God as well as the mistakes he made and their consequences. We will finish up our Bible class with the life of King Solomon. So much to learn! God has been so good to the 4th grade this year and we praise Him for all we've experienced.

5th Grade Kent

Field Day was a wet and wild success! The students had a wonderful time and Mr. and Mrs. Kent went home totally saturated. It is not every class that gets to throw water balloons at the teacher. What can I say? They love school! We also had the opportunity to tour the flight line at Tyndall Air Force Base on April 29th. The students ate lunch on base and everyone had a great time. We are working on finishing all of our academics and are looking forward to our DARE graduation on May 14th. We will be going to the Marina Civic Center and participate in the ceremony and then we will go to Loco's for a Mexican lunch. Before we know it we will be having our end-of-the-year party at Frank Brown Park at the pool. I truly love these kids! They have been a blessing in my life. I will miss them, but I am excited as they approach 6th grade.

MelvinbookFaculty Member Publishes Book

We have an author among us! Our English teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Melvin, has just had her first book published. From the Dust is the story of an African pastor's return to Uganda after his seven year exile as he fled from the terror of Idi Amin. The book is filled with touching stories of his efforts in restoring the war-torn, ravaged country; rescuing children from despairing lives on the city streets; and founding the Presbyterian church in Uganda. Mrs. Melvin has worked for several years with Pastor Sempangi in the writing and publishing of his second book. Copies of the book will be available in the office or from Mrs. Melvin for $15.00. The majority of the profits will go to help the Ugandan orphans.

Guidance News
Our students have done outstanding this year as they took the ACT and the SAT. If you have a child going into the 11th or 12th grade next year they need to take every opportunity to take these test. Many scholarships are available for students. The scholarships look not only at their high school GPA, but also their ACT/SAT scores. Please encourage your child to take either or both of these tests. The ACT will be given on June 14th with a registration deadline of May 9th, and the SAT will be given on June 7th with a registration deadline of May 5th.
