Robotics

Pat & Suzanne Hermes, Instructors

This program is offered to students in grades 4-8. It meets after school once a week and some Saturdays. The program is sponsored by the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and introduces students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.  Elementary and middle-school students get to:

  • Design, build and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology
  • Apply real-world math and science concepts
  • Research challenges facing today’s scientists
  • Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills
  • Participate in tournaments and celebrations

Strategy Club

Michael Hagans, Instructor
Strategy Club is a time for learning logic, wisdom, and good sportsmanship for students from 4th grade through 12th. We use board games to learn such strategic ideas as planning, knowing your opponent as well as yourself, knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, and focusing on what is important rather than getting lost in the minutiae. Learning from our mistakes, congratulating our opponents, being gracious in victory, and having the versatility to change our plans when they are upset by others, are all important in Strategy Club. Logic is highly emphasized. In other words, we aim to put into practice Jesus’ command to be wise as serpents, yet harmless as doves.  Club meets on Fridays after school.
