Reflections
Most of us hope to just get home in the evening,
sit down and relax for a minute before taking on the
task of finishing the night. As I sit in ther
ecliner, pick up the TV remote, there is a cringe, a
feeling that I just know what's going to pop up on
the screen. More news about housing, finances,
politics, and the latest problems around Bay County.
However, having spent the day on "holy ground" and
around "the saints" I can tell you that the very
next thought is - "Whew! Glad you're in control,
Lord. You were today. Thaaaaank youuuu."
I hope your time on the Covenant campus give
you a similar reminder that
things are really pretty good for us, relatively
speaking to the rest of the
country and the world. And things are really good
around our campus. I
love coming to school in the morning. I hope your
children and young people
say the same thing. Remember, our school name is
Covenant Christian School,
not Utopia Academy. We're a lot like you as a
Christian family, still in
the process of growing closer to the Lord, every
day, every week, every
semester.
I see wonderful things as I survey the campus.
I see wonderful things
ahead, because He already has them planned for you,
me and this school.

Library News
This month our preschoolers have enjoyed their first Author
study of Doreen Cronin, author of the popular "Click, Clack,
Moo" series. We have also enjoyed some familiar Bible
stories told with big, bright pictures. The K5 classes began
a study of the Author/Illustrator Don Freeman with his
popular "Corduroy" books. They enjoyed activities such as
"sewing" a pocket for Corduroy. 1st & 2nd Grades learned
about the works of Marc Brown, the Author and Illustrator of
the favorite "Arthur" books. They are also very excited to
have begun taking Accelerated Reading quizzes and are
keeping my printer very busy. 3rd,4th & 5th grades have
completed their read of "School Days" by Laura Ingalls
Wilder and enjoyed making and tasting their own homemade
butter. This brought the book to life for them as it was a
typical school lunch for Laura and Mary Ingalls. It was
interesting to compare the differences in school during the
1800's and our school today.
Coming soon to our Library: A new A.R. incentive program for
students where everyone can benefit from their successful
reading! |

Art News
We're off to a great start in art. We've already broken in
the new markers, crayons, paint AND oil pastels! In first
grade we made a "Giant Me" and decorated the art room with
lots of 1st graders. We've also learned about warm and cool
colors and made a sailboat painting using warm colors for
the sky and cool colors for the water. In Second Grade we
are studying The Masters. We have reviewed facial
proportions and learned to use overlapping to create a
family portrait. We used strings to paint our family's, it
is VERY hard to paint an accurate face using a piece of
string. We have fantastic family portraits. Painting with
string gives the splatter effect is similar to the work of
Jackson Pollack and we will continue with a study of Pollack
followed by Andy Warhol. We continue the study of The
Masters in Third Grade. We've started with Marc Chagall, an
artist famous for saying "Great art begins where nature
ends." We've discussed God's beautiful creation and that,
though th ere is no end to His ability, we sometimes add to
what we see in our artwork. We've made a drawing of our
houses, the sun (complete with a smile) and ourselves
holding something we love. In line with Chagall's idea of
putting a little twist on nature, we have drawn them all
facing different directions and with dream-like colors. The
Fourth Grade has begun a study of the different styles of
art. We've started with Surrealism and one of the artist in
that movement named, Frida Kahlo. Kahlo is a Mexican artist
who struggled with her love of her homeland and the luxuries
of life in America. Her self portrait is surreal in that she
includes an exaggerated view of both Mexico and America.
We've created our own self portrait and included our
sometimes unrealistic view of our circumstances around us.
Fifth Graders are learning the Principles of Design this
year: balance, contrast, movement, emphasis, pattern, rhythm
and unity. The principles are tied in with famous painters
and their work. Paul Klee is famous for his painting called
"Sinbad and the Sailor". We've started by creating a 1" grid
(very difficult to get all of those lines straight) and
added our own boat and fish. We will complete these with
watercolor. This painting is an example of contrast, balance
and pattern.
Congratulations to those with artwork in the Bay County
Fair! 1st Grade- Riley Gillman and Reanna Thompson 2nd

Computer News
Computer Basics is the key to laying the ground work for
computer skills. The elementary students have have
successfully covered tutorials in their curriculum this 9
weeks in data storage, technology symbols, printer, and
scanner. The students are learning keyboarding skills also.
Typing Instructor for kids program enhances the students
practice with keyboarding. The typing program helps to make
typing practice fun. Middle school students have covered
their basic fundamentals of computer skills as well as
browsing the internet for research sources. The students
have learned how to discern if a web site is valid and
accurate with its information. Mavis Beacon Typing and
Typing Instructor II offer paced typing practice to sharp
their typing speed and accuracy skills. We look forward to
the next unit on spreadsheet projects |

Music Notes
The year so far in music has been wonderful! Some of the
elementary classes are bigger, therefore producing a more
powerful sound! The children always amaze me as to how fast
they pick up on new songs that we sing. I just get a
blessing out of being your child's music teacher and I am
blessed to be here at Covenant. I am excited to announce
that this years Christmas program will be on December 1 at
6:30 pm. The theme this year is "3 Wise Men and a Baby". I
can't believe that the holiday season will soon be here!
The students are very excited about performing this years
program. The K5 will begin the program and then they will
be able to go sit with their teachers and watch the rest of
the program. This years attire will be khaki pants, and
Christmas colored shirts - (of course, no Santa Claus). I
will make sure more information is given at a later time.
I hope that your student is coming home singing songs to
you which we've learned in music! Happy Fall Ya'll!

Preschool News
Whitney Grant K3
Mrs. Whitney's Busy Bees have certainly earned the title
this week! We have added letter recognition to our program
and have had fun crafting most of our day around each letter
and it's sound. Last week we celebrated the letter "A" with
apples galore, and this week we are making backpacks to use
on our nature hike for items that begin with "B." We have
also added visits to the treasure box as a reward incentive
for good behavior. The busy bees are coming around to school
fun!
Jennifer Adams K4
September started off with lots of learning in Mrs.
Jennifer's "Froggy Four Class". Manners were the subject
when we made our 'Manner Mouse' puppet and practiced good
manners with them. When we learned about shapes, signs, and
symbols we were so excited to tell our parents that a stop
sign has eight sides and is called an octagon! We had an
awesome time in chapel when Mrs. Anna had some of us help
her act out the story of the good Samaritan. Spanish is
exciting, too. We learning how to say the parts of our face
in spanish! The Froggy Fours are singing and shouting in
music waiting to sit at Jesus' side. Fall is here and we
are so happy.
Jane
Partee K4
Mrs. Jane Partee's Partners have had a wonderful celebration
of all things "Me" this past month. We concluded our "all
about me" units with a portfolio of our favorite things, our
families, and our personalities. What a wonderful time we
have had discussing all the wonders our God has given us. We
concluded our month with a Johnny Appleseed celebration
which helped us wrap up the family trees we have been
working on as well as introduce graphing, patterns, and
handwriting. It's fun to Partner together!
Kristin DeVries K4
The fifteen "Fishy Fours" are off to a great start in Mrs.
Kris's class. The children are doing a great job of cutting
and gluing, and we've finally begun our studey of the
alphabet. We made caterpillars out of circles for letter
_C_ and we're painting with vegetables for letter _V_. We
love going to the library and music and having Spanish
lessons with Sra. Dietrich, but the all-time favorite is
still the playground! It's so much fun just to be together
with new friends our own age! We can't wait to got to the
fire station next week!
Mara
Harrison Preschool Director
What an exciting time we are having in Preschool! We
started our Special Areas this month, and the children are
having a blast! We are focusing on color recognition in
Spanish, Storytime in Library, and "Singing, Shouting,
Praising the Lord" in Music. We concluded our month with a
Preschool-wide movie day in the Fellowship Hall where we ate
popcorn, watched Johnny Appleseed on the big screen, and
gave praises to God. We also hosted our first ever Preschool
Open House with great success and are looking forward to our
first fieldtrip to the Fire Station next week. Come see our
scarecrow decorations-Fall is in the air! |

Elementary News
K5 Walker
September was such a fun month. We enjoyed our field trip
to the post office as part of our community helper's social
studies unit. The children were very excited to see and
hear the special machines and to learn about what they do.
We are looking forward to having other community helpers
visit our classroom. Perhaps there will be an alumnus among
them! We started our fall celebration with a focus on
apples, which included water color painting, hand & finger
print trees, apple printing, apple tasting, a bar graph of
favorite apples, and counting apple flavored cereal. We
learned a little about God's omniscience as we pondered the
fact that, though anyone can count the seeds in an apple,
only God can count the apples in a seed. Our kindergarten
students are learning short vowel and consonant sounds. We
are learning how these sounds relate to each other as we use
this information to build and decode words. Some students
would like to jump into reading groups right now! But we
will have to wait until November. (Waiting is another thing
that we practice in kindergarten!). The children are also
learning to sing A Mighty Fortress is Our God. They are
expanding their vocabulary as they joyfully sing this great
hymn of our Christian faith. It is such a pleasant sound in
the classroom when the children spontaneously sing as we
transition from one lesson or activity to the next.
K5Mitchell
Mrs. Mitchell's Kindergarten has had a great month! We are
busy learning letters and sounds as well as numbers and
pennies! We made muffins and read the story "If You Give a
Moose a Muffin" when we studied the letter "Mm". We also
had a field trip to the Post Office and mailed a letter. We
shared stories of Abraham and Noah and made an ark complete
with animals! It was a busy month but such a fun month!
1st
Earnest
We had a terrific month in Mrs. Earnest's First Grade Class!
There were several highlights for the month. Our Service
Project for the 152 Campaign saw us give $1,132.25 to help
purchase an ultrasound machine for a center in Uganda. The
children were delighted to receive an email from a lady in
Africa thanking us for raising monies to help new moms see
pictures of their babies before they are even born. It was a
great lesson to be able to teach children the value of life
from the time "God places the baby in mommy's tummy" until
the time the baby is born. We also had a wonderful
celebration to honor Johnny Appleseed. We learned how he not
only spread apple seeds across America, but how he also
spread the message of Jesus. In our Bible studies we are
learning about Abraham and how his life was so important in
God's plan. Our life is also important in God's plan. We are
learning how even when we make poor decisions that God will
somehow use them for good. We are enjoying our Reading and
English classes with Mrs. Weber. She has really shown us a
love of reading and we are always excited to go to her
classes.
2nd
Martin
Second graders continue to learn many new things as we
progress through this school year. In Bible, we are seeing
how God used prophets to speak to both Israel and Judah. We
are counting money combinations, as well as, adding and
subtracting two-digit numbers. We tried cooked apples and
grabbed an apple tied to a string (no hands allowed) as we
celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day. Our favorite though is
Science where we are learning about the animal world that
God created. Be sure to ask us how we should be more like
the beaver.
3rd
Street
Our third grade class has been busy learning all kinds of
new things. In math, we have started long division and are
continuing to work on our multiplication facts. In English
they just finished writing the step by step instructions to
play a game. We are moving on to learn about common and
proper nouns. Our Bible lessons have taken us on to God's
promises to Abraham and will soon be moving on to Moses and
the exodus. The students are excited to watch the grass
seeds we planted grow and are waiting for our potato to
grow. Our next unit is on animals. They will be working on
animal notebooks. We will be taking a trip to the zoo to
culminate this unit. We are definitely busy in third grade!!
5th Kent
5th grade is busy with our DARE classes again this year.
We are having a 10 week study taught by Officer Sherry
Bagwell of the Bay County Sheriff's Department. The students
enjoy having Officer Bagwell in our classroom. They will
have their own graduation ceremony in November here at CCS.
We are also keeping our eyes on the Presidential campaign.
We discuss current events and pray for our leaders. It's not
too soon to be aware of how our country's leaders are put
into office, and certainly they all need much prayer! |

Guidance News
As I told you last month the we took a group of students to
the University of Mobile on
Thursday September the 4th. We toured the campus, sat in on
a "WorldViews" class,
and ate lunch in the cafeteria. The students have told me
they had a great time and
would like to do it again.
Four of our juniors have been selected to participate in
Junior Leadership Bay this year.
This is a monthly program sponsored by the Bay County
Chamber of Commerce.
The students are: Julia ConRoy, Alex Cowden, Nia Naumann,
and Emily Trumbull.
In preparing for college, the part that most students
dislike is taking the ACT or the
SAT. Parents please encourage your child if, he/she is a
junior or senior, to take
either of these test as often as they can. I would also
like to encourage the sophomores
to take both of them at the end of this school year. I have

Box
Tops for Education
What is "Box Tops"? Simply put, Box Tops For Education is a
year-round fundraiser that helps your school earn cash. You
can follow these three easy steps to help Covenant Christian
School earn cash this year:
Step 1:
Clip box Tops
Clip the familiar Box Tops coupons from hundreds of products
and bring them to our school. Each Box Top is worth ten
cents.
Step 2:
Your school coordinator collects, counts, and mails them to
Box Tops for Education.
Step 3:
Your school earns cash! At the end of the year (May) your
school receives a check for the coupons you've submitted.
Last year Covenant received $750.00. Our goal this year is
$1000! Encourage your family and friends to clip and save
Box Tops. They may be turned in to your child's teacher, or
brought to the collection box in the school office. Thank
you so much for your help. You may direct any questions
about this project to our Box Tops coordinator, Karen
Napier. 271-2061
Please note that
our school no longer collects Campbell's soup labels. |
